Well, I can be quite mangkok when it comes to the jargons of photography. ISO, aperture, shutter speed, noise, hot shoe (apa ni? Manolo Blahniks?)… I don’t know what all these are about and, being such a lazy bum, I am not a manual reader either. On how I managed to operate the Ixus… erm, it’s purely intuitive and thanks to my brother who showed me how.
I decided to ask the “expert” on this matter.
ThatJames: ISO is the speed of the “film”
ThatJames: normally, we beli film at the shop… we usually take the cheapo 100 ISO

Gina: i always buy ISO400
ThatJames: then ppl started selling ISO 200 cheap
Gina: coz they said can take it in the dark worr
ThatJames: 400 is for low light conditions
ThatJames: yes
ThatJames: so if the sky is dark, or u shoot indoors, use 400
ThatJames: if bright, use 100, 200 lah
ThatJames: senang
ThatJames: what else u wanna know? While my photography theory haven’t all gone back to lecturer

Gina: then for this ah.. f3.5 to f8.00

ThatJames: the lubang
ThatJames: 3.5 is a big lubang
ThatJames: 8 is a small lubang
ThatJames: means… if in low light conditions… use 3.5
ThatJames: if very bright, try 8
ThatJames: if bright can also can use big aperature
ThatJames: that will give you nice depth of field…
ThatJames: near things sharp, far things blur
ThatJames: all the 1/20 lah and 1/300 is your shutter speed
Gina: so if you get higher shutter speed meaning, you will freeze the pics ah?

ThatJames: if you use slow speed, u get those motions trails lah
Gina: must we use flash?
ThatJames: never ever use flash cos flash makes ppl looks ugly and the photographer look stoopid

ThatJames: if u use a slow speed intentionally, u should use a tripod
Gina: slow shutter speed have to use tripod

Gina: so itu 1/15 to 1/3200 is shutter speed
Gina: i pakai pakai yesterday

ThatJames: 1/15 is slower than 1/3200
Gina: this camera shutter speed sampai 1/3200 worr
ThatJames: i think depending on the lighting

Gina: let’s say dark
ThatJames: no need so fast speed
Gina: coz if bright, shudnt have any problems lah
ThatJames: if dark,… u’ll need high ISO, large aperture… go for 3.5 or 2.8 if you have
Gina: big lubang
ThatJames: and go slower speed…. like 1/15 or 1/30 i think can still maintain clarity… anything lower will register your handshake

Well, if anyone owns a Canon Powershot Pro S5 IS now, I want to be your friend lah. Please teach this mangkok on how to operate on this bulky thing. I don’t want to screw up using this camera I bought over the weekend! (Thanks, sis for the lovely belated birthday present!) I am excited! And if there is any photobug trip, please count me in!
